May 2008

It’s almost here!

The end of the school year is fast approaching. Before you know it, students and staff will be packing up and leaving for the summer. Parents, please help us and help your students to remain diligent and finish the school year strong. We must encourage them to remain persistent and to keep working hard. Senior parents, let’s work together to make certain the strange phenomenon of “senioritis” does not get the best of our twelfth grade students.

Spring Showcase was once again a success. The students were able to showcase their work and show off the strides they have made and their accomplishments since the beginning of the school year. Parental and staff support, along with the students’ hard work, were essential in helping our students grow academically and socially. Our appreciation and gratitude go to Mr. Stepner for organizing the event. I also would like to thank the PTSA and the Foundation for helping put the entire night together. Thank you so much to everyone involved, especially the students. Without them, Spring Showcase would not have been a success.

STAR testing took place during the month of April. Leading up to STAR testing, the students were given test taking tips in their classes to help them raise their test scores. Just prior to the week of testing the students were invited to a STAR Pep Rally where the goal was to pump everyone up to put their best effort forward in order to improve our scores. During the testing there was an atmosphere of urgency to do well. Extra time was provided for those students who wished to take advantage of it. I’m happy to say that many of the students took the test seriously and took advantage of the extra time in order to do their very best. We’re keeping our fingers crossed!

We are just finishing with AP testing. We had over 550 students sign up to take of variety tests. Over 950 AP tests have been administered. Students scoring high on an AP test may receive college credit for the subject they took the test in. Congratulations, Serra Students!

Graduation is only five weeks away. Soon our seniors will be walking out of the gates of Serra High School for the last time, not as students but as alumni of Junipero Serra High School. We are so very proud of our seniors and the accomplishments they have made throughout their entire time here at Serra High School. Prom is scheduled for June 7th. Please make certain your students clear any LOP points so they are able to attend the prom. In addition, let’s remain attentive to our students’ progress so that we may support them and ensure they conclude their school careers at SHS successfully.

Senior exhibitions are scheduled for the week of May 19th. Parents if you wish to volunteer and sit on an exhibition panel please feel free to contact Stacy Brennan at sbrennan@sandi.net. Come see what our seniors have accomplished during their time here at Serra High School, and be prepared to be impressed. Come and enjoy our Spring Band, Orchestra and Choral Concert or a drama performance. You won’t be disappointed. Finally, come to our awards ceremonies, and bask in the pride of your students and their accomplishments.

Serra High School is a great school to be a part of. I am so very proud of the students and thankful to the parents and staff for their dedication to our kids. Congratulations on another great SHS school year!
